They marvel at how easily I can hang a shirt
and button it.

They nearly applaud.

They celebrate how effortlessly I sit on the floor
to wind up the vacuum cord.

I hear a gasp.

The shake their heads in disbelief
at how far I can bend to scrub the bathtub.

They laugh out loud.

Not since I was very small were my simple
movements so celebrated.
It’s as if they are watching a child walk
for the first time.

I wonder if actually,
they are remembering
a past time
when they could move so freely.
