A poem a day for December, Poem 27

Here nor There

There is a dangerous distance – a terrible view –
that drains life
and strains spirit

A long view – if long enough
has comfort and hope
and meaning.

A short view – if short enough
encourages to hold the day,
each day,
precious.

But the in-between – neither Here nor There
other worldly in its heaviness
for drudgery of work
and dread of last kisses
last hugs, last words –

That distance
is best viewed off focus
or saved
for brooding poets.
