poem – untitled

I used to lead my children
here and there
encouraging them to keep up
to walk “at the speed of mom”

And now,
I lag behind
keeping up isn’t possible –
they move
at the speed of youth

Little hands grow
and slip away
making their own days
and loves
and faith –
all theirs now and not mine

Helpless-hopeful
I watch
from a new distance
as they run on
ahead of me.

“They move at the speed of youth.” Indeed, they do. ♥
